Massive Resistance

These are the best of the photos I took for my class. Our assignment was to take pictures that concerned the history of Massive Resistance, an attempt by the Virginia Public Schools to block integration. These two buildings were two of the schools affected.

Hello Again!

This is the first post I've made since last year. My photography goal for this year is to refine my photography skills and explore ways to express myself through my photos. The photo on the left is one that inspires me. Even though I took it myself, I didn't feel like I chose to take it. It was more like I was compelled to, like it was an instinct. Even now when I look at it, I'm moved by something about it- the sea, the cliff, the walls.

Best of 2010

These are the pictures which I consider to be the best I've taken since January 1st. All but the snowy fence picture were taken in Europe; I photographed the fence shortly after Charlottesville's record-breaking snowfall (though much of the snow had melted by the time of exposure). These were the pictures I wanted in my end-of-year portfolio, but thanks to a paper shortage I was forced to use the prints from previous assignments ( all of which have already been posted on this blog) instead.

Creative Writing Exchange

This is the picture I chose for the Creative Writing Assignment. The poem I chose was very atmospheric, talking about grassy fields, blue skies, fluffy clouds, forested mountains...and the moment I read it, I realized I knew the perfect place to shoot it. I snuck onto a neighboring farm and captured this vista.

Architecture (You Choose)

I was going to Europe on a field trip over Spring Break, so when I learned that one of the options for this assignment was architectural photos, I knew that I had to bring my camera and shoot lots of pictures. And I did: my memory card had more than 1800 pictures on it by the time we got back. Most of them are on my computer at home, but the more architectural ones also went to the Photography servers. This shot of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris is the one that wound up in the critique folder, but in hindsight, I had some better photos from the trip. Those are now part of the "Best of 2010" post.

UVA Photoshoot

This was the picture I chose for the UVA photoshoot assignment. I would have picked something more interesting, but the shutter on my camera was sticking and my other pictures came out really unfocused and blurry. Oh well.

I did my story project on the snowfall, and got a bunch of cool images of the massive accumulation, like the car in the snowdrift there. I especially like the images of the ice, like the frozen drainpipe.

My dog passed away last tuesday. The top picture was the last taken of her before she died. The lower one was the best picture of her I could find in my portfolio.

This was the image I chose for my Still Life assignment. I had other pictures with a greater variety of objects, but I decided to go with this image of the dismantled puzzle box. (In case you're wondering, the object in the box is a paperweight.)

Action assignment

This is a photo of some people play-fighting at my lunch table. The f-stop was wide open, so the background is really blurry, but to increase the emphasis on the foreground I desaturated it and blurred it even more.

This self-portrait was shot for the portrait assignment. I rather like it, but because it wasn't copied to the disk right it came out extremely pixellated, meaning I couldn't use it for my exam portfolio. *sigh*
